Skin Types vs Skin Conditions

Its important to understand the difference between a skin type vs a skin condition not only as a consumer but as a skin therapist.

As an esthetician you encounter clients self-diagnosing their skin and using incorrect products because of this. Using incorrect products can escalate or cause skin conditions rather than treat them; so when recommending products be mindful of the textures favorable to a skin type while addressing skin conditions. Here’s a few pointers:

Skin Types are based on how much oil the skin produces.

Dry skin (lack of oil)

Oily skin (excess oil)

Combination skin (a combination of oily, dry and normal zones)

Skin conditions are caused by an imbalance in the skin which can affect most skin types. For example:

Dehydration- loss of water

Sensitivity- environmental, products

Acne – excess oil, P. bacteria

Rosacea- hereditary, environmental

Pigmentation- hormonal imbalances, sun exposure

When recommending products be mindful of textures favorable to a skin type while addressing skin issues.
